The Himba of Namibia people don't bath with water because of their harsh climate conditions. The Himba people live in one of the most extreme environment on earth with the harsh desert climate and the unavailablity of potable water.
The Himba are known for their red matted braids, which are painstakingly made by mixing animal fat,ash and ground ochre,a stone found locally. few step from where we are sitting, a group of women are bonding. They are smearing their bodies with the same ochre mixture
Apart from applying red ochre on their skin, Himba Women do take a daily smoke bath to maintain personal hygiene. They will put some smouldering charcoal into a little bowl of herbs (mostly leaves and little branches of Commiphora trees) and wait for the smoke to ascend
Despite this fact,the women are some of the most beautiful in all of Africa and Oddly enough, they do not smell the way westerner would expect them to. They have a sweet smoky smell that is quite pleasant and inoffensive
